The Supreme Court-appointed mediators on Friday reached Shaheen Bagh, the epicentre of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) demonstrations, to talk to the protesters in an attempt to find a way out of the impasse. The talks between the interlocutors -- Advocates Sanjay Hegde and Sadhna Ramachandran -- and the anti-CAA protesters began with the road blockade at Shaheen Bagh.

Addressing the Shaheen Bagh protesters, Advocate Sanjay Hegde said that the protests can go on but also asserted that the roads should be opened.

"You all have to decide together that protests can continue but the road should also be opened. No citizen has the right to deny other citizen's rights," Advocate Sanjay Hegde said, adding, "We are there with you. The Supreme Court is also with you because the Constitution says the right to protest is everyone's right."

POLICE HAVE BLOCKED THE ROAD: SHAHEEN BAGH PROTESTERS

Advocate Sadhna Ramachandran also demanded to know who has occupied the other road at Shaheen Bagh. When one of the protesters said that the adjoining road was closed by them for their security but they are letting ambulances and emergency vehicles go.

On being asked if the demonstrators have closed both the roads, one of the protesters said it was the police which closed one road.

A protester said, "They opened the road for a short time this morning. I told the police to let me go. They said the protesters have stopped the road. I told them I'm a woman from Shaheen bagh. We have not asked for the road to be stopped."

POLICE SAY THEY HAVE ORDERS FROM ABOVE: PROTESTERS

"It's the police that have blocked the road. Plainclothes policemen on the road have been stopping traffic. They said we have orders from above," a protester said.

The protesters asked why the Shaheen Bagh was being maligned, claiming that it was the police that blocked the roads. They also maintained that they have let ambulances and emergency vehicles pass through the anti-CAA protest site.

"Why is Shaheen Bagh being maligned? Why are we being made the enemy? The Uttar Pradesh Police is standing in plainclothes saying road is blocked. The police are responsible for the problems that have happened. It's the UP police that are responsible for blocking the road from Noida," a demonstrator said.

The interlocutors then asked the SHO whether roads can be opened and security can be provided to the protesters. When the SHO assured that the security would be provided to the protesters, the protesters demanded a "written assurance of security from the Delhi Police".

"We have to have a space to have our voices heard. We have been on the road for 70 days and yet they are not listening to us. Police are here for our protection. Ambulances and school buses are going from the road," one of the protesters said.

DELHI POLICE PAR BHAROSA NAHI: PROTESTERS

When the interlocutors spoke to the SHO about the security of the protesters, the demonstrators at Shaheen Bagh chanted: "Delhi Police par bhrosa nahi [We don't trust the Delhi Police]"

FORGET ABOUT ROAD BLOCKADE, TALK ABOUT CAA, NRC: PROTESTERS

The protesters asked the Supreme Court interlocutors to talk about the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) as that was why the protesters have been demonstrating for past two months.

Speaking of NRC in Assam, one of the protesters said, "Look at Assam NRC. People lost their lands, they don't have papers. You take CAA back, NRC back, we will leave immediately. We have left our home, our sleep. Indian courts take 25 years to decide a case. Should we sit for 25 years for the SC verdict?" asked one of the anti-CAA protesters at Shaheen Bagh.

"Forget about a road. Tell us what will happen if they don't allow Muslims in the CAA? People in Assam are dying in detention camps," one of the protesters said. To which, Advocate Sadhna Ramachandra said the issue for Friday was the blockade of the roads at Shaheen Bagh.

SHAHEEN BAGH NOT PAKISTAN, WE ARE INDIANS: PROTESTERS

During the Delhi Assembly polls, Shaheen Bagh was termed as mini Pakistan by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kapil Mishra. In a tweet, Kapil Mishra said, "Pakistan has entered Shaheen Bagh. Mini Pakistans are being created in Delhi. The Indian law is not followed in areas like Shaheen Bagh, Chand Bagh and Inderlok. Pakistani hooligans have captured the streets of Delhi."

Speaking to the mediators, the protesters said Shaheen Bagh was nit a mini Pakistan. "We are Indians," a protester said.

"The government says we are worried about students' education but when those children reach universities, the government breaks their heads. We will die but our kids' lives are at stake. Our children are being beaten. They used to say about triple talaq that we are there for our sisters. Now they say these women are taking money. That's their respect for sisters?"

Leaving the protest site, Advocate Sanjay Hegde said, "We have listened to you...Will convey your message to the Supreme Court....I am not part of the government that is why I do not have the authority to take any action."
